Teeth Whitening

Make Those Teeth Shine!

Summertime is upon us and that means it’s time for a whiter, glowing smile! Whitening your teeth can give you a fresh new look that is sure to turn heads! Dr. Sama believes that everyone should feel like the best version of themselves at all times, and she can’t wait to help you!

What Causes Teeth to Stain?

There are two main types of tooth stain: intrinsic (stains occurring from within the tooth) and extrinsic (stains occurring on the outside of the tooth).

Extrinsic stains can be caused by smoking, coffee, tea, red wine, and some medications such as liquid iron. Extrinsic stains can be removed by having a professional cleaning done. Some toothpastes also contain a mild abrasive which may remove SOME stain, but likely not all. The best way to remove stain is by keeping up with your routine cleanings with one of our amazing hygienists at 16 Mile Dental! Keeping current with your dental cleanings will not only make sure your teeth stay as white as they can be, but your hygienist can also give you helpful tips and tricks to help reduce stain in between appointments. For example, one great way to reduce stain caused by red wine or coffee/tea, is to swish with water after consumption. Brushing your teeth immediately after drinking these beverages is NOT recommended, as it may cause further staining and/or enamel erosion.

Intrinsic stains can be caused by birth defects, thinning of enamel due to aging, trauma, or tetracycline use during pregnancy. Intrinsic stains cannot be removed by a cleaning appointment or toothpastes. Intrinsic stains typically require teeth whitening to be improved. It must be noted that although bleaching materials are found over-the-counter, they contain a very low percentage of bleaching material and often times can be unsuccessful. At 16 Mile Dental, we strongly encourage our patients to do their own research and formulate opinions based on factual research, as opposed to what they hear on commercials or from friends and family. Professional whitening material almost always provides better results MUCH faster.

If you have any additional questions about teeth whitening, be sure to contact 16 Mile Dental! We are happy to help you get that while smile you have always dreamed of!
